Creating a new document

CreaText offers a simple but effective way to create and setup new HTML documents.
First, choose 'New document...' from the File menu (Command-Shift-N on your Keyboard).
A dialog opens. It shows you the basic HTML parameters you usually set up first when creating a new document.
The single options are as follows:

HTML standard: Here you choose the HTML frame, which can be 'Strict' (if you want to use pure HTML 4), 'Frameset' (if you want to use frames) or 'Transitional' (if you want to use some obsolete tags, e.g. <FONT>). Then you can choose between HTML version 4.0 and 4.01. The lastest version (4.01) is prepared for XML integration. XHTML is even more prepared for XML, you can even add an XML prologue to set the font encoding. The World Wide Web Consortium calls it "A Reformulation of HTML 4 in XML 1.0". If you choose XHTML, the document created is automatically put into XHTML mode. If you choose HTML 4/4.01, XHTML mode is disabled, even if you have chosen that XHTML mode is default.
Another little tip: You can change the HTML type with your keyboard by pressing Command-1 for Strict, Command-2 for Frame and Command-3 for Transitional. Press Option-Tab on your keyboard to switch the HTML version.
HTML options:
Title: The title for your document (displayed as the window title in browsers).
Colors: These fields allow you to choose the background color, text color, link color, visited link color and active link color for your document. You can select these colors by pressing the select button to the right or enter a hex formatted color into the fields. Below the HTML options, there is also an option for a hover link color. This is a special option only supported by Internet Explorer and Opera which means that a link changes its color when you move your mouse cursor over it.
Meta Tags: This allows you to choose Meta Tags, which are used for informations in your document, which, for example, are important by search engines.
Use settings from...: When you press this button, you can choose a file whose HTML settings should be used.

When you are done, push the button labeled "Create" (or push Enter or Return on your keyboard). If you want to create a blank document, you can push the button labeled "Blank" or press Command-N on your keyboard.
